Day Two: Cal Black Media at Democratic National Convention ‘08
Finally…I made it inside the Pepsi Center! It is fun meeting new folk from around the country. We are united…regardless of what you are seeing and hearing among some in the press! There are lots of protesters (not sure what they’re protesting), but we just keep moving from event to event. It’s no different than being on a college campus with protesters…. I sort of like it (as long as the protests are non-violent). It reminds us of the freedoms we have in this country.
I must say however, the area around the Pepsi Center is on lockdown….MUCH security…and as Forrest Gump would say: “That’s all I’m going to say about that!”
I sat with my California delegation…one row in front of the Georgia delegation. One of my fellow delegates kept telling me that the actress Jacqueline Bisset was behind us. This was not surprising to me because there are many celebrities in town for the convention. However, all of the people in the row behind us…..the ones I danced and had a good time with…were African-American! I soon realized he had the wrong name…he meant Angela Bassett!
The Kennedy speech was very moving and we were all glad to see him in person. However, nothing prepared me for the emotion I felt when the beautiful Michelle Obama appeared. I must say…I support Barack Obama because of his policies and what he stands for….I would support him if he were brown, white, or purple! However….. …tonight…as an African-American woman I was SO PROUD to see Michelle as our prospective first lady! Not just because she is Barack’s wife…but because of her own accomplishments!
As a Black woman I thought of all we have had to endure to succeed….all of the slights because of our skin color….always having to be BETTER!
It’s been a long road…but we have endured! Not only that….America has endured and we have indeed come a long way!
Michelle Obama spoke for all of the sisters that came before her who were silenced. Michelle Obama spoke for the women of today who also want their voices heard. Michelle Obama spoke for ALL American women who want their piece of the dream.
Go on Sister!!!
